When we think of self-care, what comes to mind are face masks, bubble baths and scented candles. In reality, it involves anything we do to take care of ourselves in order to function better as a whole. A common misconception is that self-care is synonymous with women, but as society evolves more men are turning towards self-care practices. 

What self-care is and where to start

The World Health Organization defines self-care as: “the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a health worker”. This definition includes all aspects of ensuring one is physically healthy, but as self-care becomes more established, the definition becomes more relevant as such. 

Self-care has become about ensuring we are physically, mentally and emotionally healthy in order to lead a sustainable lifestyle. That could mean exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, prioritizing sleeping early over working late, even being more financially responsible. We can start by identifying what evokes the feeling of peace and put that at the top of the to-do list.
